The fall of man began with one simple act and it was centered around a piece of fruit. According to the Bible , through this one disobedient act all the maladies of man were brought crashing into our world. Death, war, famine, disease, and every great terror or dread that has ever entered the mind. It's important that we study and seek God's truth, the picture that he is painting through his word about just what these fruits are and what they mean.
Now we know there were two kinds of fruit in the garden. That which God allowed Adam and Eve to eat, and that which he forbade them to eat, and we also know that God commanded Adam and Eve to live fruitful lives.

When The Son of God comes to earth, it's important to study his words on the matter. The thrust of them being there are only two kinds of fruit, identifying two types of trees, and pronouncing a type of curse or judgement to come on bad fruit and barren trees.

Luke 6:43-45
43 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart.

In his letter to the Church in Galatia, Paul expands upon Christ's teachings. He specifically identifies them as the fruits of the spirit, which are good, and the fruits of the flesh, which are bad.
Galatians 5:19-23
19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:19-23

In the Gospel of John, the apostle records Christ's words as to the reason we are to live fruitful lives. Writing that good fruit not only honors God, but is the whole purpose of our lives, or as John puts it our appointment.

In the Gospel of Luke Jesus tells us a parable about a certain fig tree:
Luke 13:6-9
6 Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any. 7 So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’
8 “‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. 9 If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’”
Luke 13:6-9

In Mark we read of the Messiah himself interacting with a fig tree and when it produces no fruit, he curses it and it dies.

When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.
15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’[a]? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[b]”
18 The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.
19 When evening came, Jesus and his disciples[c] went out of the city.
20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”

In John chapter 15 Christ gives even more clarity on what the source of this fruit is and ultimately who is working as a Gardener to produce even more fruit.
John 15:1-6 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. |
In the 14th chapter of Hosea, we read of Israel's repentance, and in their turning back to God, we read a beautiful poetry that describes the nation as olive tree's blossoming.
1 Return, Israel, to the Lord your God.
Your sins have been your downfall!
2 Take words with you
and return to the Lord.
Say to him:
“Forgive all our sins
and receive us graciously,
that we may offer the fruit of our lips.
3 Assyria cannot save us;
we will not mount warhorses.
We will never again say ‘Our gods’
to what our own hands have made,
for in you the fatherless find compassion.”
4 “I will heal their waywardness
and love them freely,
for my anger has turned away from them.
5 I will be like the dew to Israel;
he will blossom like a lily.
Like a cedar of Lebanon
he will send down his roots;
6 his young shoots will grow.
His splendor will be like an olive tree,
his fragrance like a cedar of Lebanon.
7 People will dwell again in his shade;
they will flourish like the grain,
they will blossom like the vine--
Israel’s fame will be like the wine of Lebanon.
8 Ephraim, what more have I to do with idols?
I will answer him and care for him.
I am like a flourishing juniper;
your fruitfulness comes from me.”
9 Who is wise? Let them realize these things.
Who is discerning? Let them understand.
The ways of the Lord are right;
the righteous walk in them,
but the rebellious stumble in them.
1 Return, Israel, to the Lord your God.

If you are connected to the vine, remain in him and bear much fruit, thank him for the painful parts of your life where even in the pain and hurt of trials and tribulations he is pruning you so that you bear even more fruit.
If you are here today reader, and you are not connected to the true vine, if you feel there is no good fruit upon your tree and that you are in danger of remaining apart from the vine and cursed, do as Israel did and repent.
Be reconciled to Christ and he will receive you, establish you, and appoint you to bear much fruit.
